Choose Your Mountain

A life-changing trek, planned around you

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest peak and one of the world’s great non-technical high-altitude treks. Its trails pass through rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert and the arctic summit zone. Mount Meru, inside Arusha National Park, offers its own demanding adventure and is also excellent preparation for Kilimanjaro.

You do not need to be a professional mountaineer, but you do need realistic preparation, proper equipment, enough time to acclimatise and complete honesty with your guide about how you feel.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Choose from six established trekking approaches, with recommended itineraries from 6 to 9 days. Longer routes generally provide a more gradual altitude profile.

Mount Meru

A beautiful 4-day hut trek with forest wildlife, crater views and a dramatic sunrise summit walk. It works well alone or before Kilimanjaro.

Find Your Route

Seven ways to experience Tanzania’s mountains

The suggested durations below are our recommended planning options. We will help you choose using your experience, available time, preferred accommodation and desired pace.

01 Scenic favourite

Machame Route

7 days Tented camps Challenging

A varied and beautiful trail with rainforest, moorland, the Shira Plateau and the dramatic Barranco Wall.

Best for: Active trekkers who want changing scenery and a social mountain atmosphere.

02 Hut accommodation

Marangu Route

6 days Mountain huts Moderate–challenging

The only standard Kilimanjaro route using shared huts instead of tents, following the same trail up and down.

Best for: Climbers who prefer a bed and roof while on the mountain.

03 Balanced choice

Lemosho Route

8 days Tented camps Moderate–challenging

A quieter western approach with wide landscapes and a gradual schedule before joining the southern circuit.

Best for: First-time high-altitude trekkers who value scenery and more time to acclimatise.

04 Longest itinerary

Northern Circuit

9 days Tented camps Moderate–challenging

A long, quieter journey around Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes with an especially gradual altitude profile.

Best for: Trekkers who can allow more days and prefer less-crowded trails.

05 Northern approach

Rongai Route

7 days Tented camps Moderate–challenging

Approaches from the north near the Kenyan border and descends on the Marangu side for contrasting scenery.

Best for: Climbers seeking a more remote approach and a different side of Kilimanjaro.

06 Steep ascent

Umbwe Route

6 days Tented camps Very challenging

A short, steep and physically demanding approach that gains altitude quickly before joining the southern trail.

Best for: Experienced high-altitude trekkers after careful screening.

07 Excellent acclimatisation

Mount Meru

4 days Mountain huts Challenging

A rewarding trek through Arusha National Park to Socialist Peak, with forest, wildlife and dramatic crater views.

Best for: A standalone adventure or preparation before Kilimanjaro.

What to Expect

The mountain journey, from arrival to descent

Each route is different, but the experience follows a careful rhythm that helps the group move safely and steadily.

1

Arrival & briefing

Meet the team, review your health information and itinerary, inspect equipment and pack the porter bag.

2

Trail days

Walk at a controlled pace with breaks, meals, guide checks and changing landscapes throughout the day.

3

Camp or hut

Rest, eat, hydrate and prepare for the next stage. Temperatures normally drop quickly after sunset.

4

Summit attempt

Begin very early, move slowly and follow the guide’s safety decisions as the altitude and cold increase.

5

Descent & recovery

Return to lower altitude, complete park formalities and transfer to your hotel for a well-earned rest.

Weather & Seasons

When should you climb?

Tanzania’s mountains can be visited throughout much of the year, but weather is unpredictable at altitude even during normally drier months.

Greener / wetter periods

March–May & November

Rain, cloud, mud and snow are more likely. Some experienced trekkers value the quieter trails, but waterproof equipment becomes especially important.

Climate patterns vary. We confirm current trail conditions during your pre-climb briefing and adjust safely when needed.

Get Mountain Ready

Preparation and essential packing

Fitness cannot prevent altitude illness, but training makes long trekking days safer and more enjoyable. Equipment must protect you from rain, wind, intense sun and temperatures below freezing.

Training before the climb

  • Begin consistent training about 8–12 weeks before departure, allowing more time if you are inactive.
  • Build endurance through long walks, hills, stairs, cycling or other steady cardiovascular exercise.
  • Add leg, core and balance strength two or three times per week.
  • Practise several-hour hikes in the boots, socks and daypack you plan to use.
  • Include rest and recovery; arrive healthy rather than exhausted from last-minute training.

Essential equipment

  • Broken-in waterproof hiking boots and spare socks.
  • Moisture-wicking base layers, warm mid-layers and an insulated jacket.
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers, warm hat, sun hat and layered gloves.
  • Warm sleeping bag, duffel bag, comfortable daypack and waterproof bag liners.
  • Headlamp, spare batteries, trekking poles, reusable water containers and personal toiletries.
  • Sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, lip protection and personal medication.
A complete route-specific packing list and rental checklist will be sent after booking. Do not buy expensive equipment before confirming what can be rented and what your chosen route requires.
Altitude & Health

Your guide must know exactly how you feel

Acute mountain sickness can affect fit and unfit climbers. Common warning signs include headache, unusual tiredness, dizziness, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. Never hide symptoms to protect a summit attempt.

Walk slowly, eat, drink regularly and follow every health check. If symptoms worsen, the safe response may be to stop ascending or descend. The lead guide’s safety decision is final.

Before booking, discuss the trek with a qualified healthcare professional—especially if you have a heart, lung, blood, neurological or other ongoing condition. Your travel insurance should explicitly cover trekking up to 6,000 metres and emergency evacuation.

This website provides general travel information and is not medical advice. Individual health and medication questions must be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional.

Before You Book

Frequently asked questions

Do I need technical climbing experience?
No technical climbing is normally required on the standard Kilimanjaro trekking routes or the regular Mount Meru trail. You do need good fitness, determination, suitable equipment and the ability to walk for several hours on uneven ground.
Which route is best for a first Kilimanjaro climb?
Lemosho, Machame and the Northern Circuit are popular choices because their longer schedules allow a more gradual journey. The right route still depends on your available days, budget, fitness, preferred accommodation and comfort with crowds.
Can you guarantee that I will reach the summit?
No responsible operator should guarantee a summit. Weather, altitude response, fitness and health are different for every climber. Your guide will always place safety above reaching the summit.
Where do we sleep?
Marangu uses shared mountain huts. The other standard Kilimanjaro routes use tents at designated camps. Mount Meru normally uses huts. Your quotation will clearly state the accommodation before and after the trek as well.
Can I rent mountain equipment in Tanzania?
Yes, many important items can be rented. We inspect required rental gear before departure, but we recommend bringing properly fitted hiking boots and personal base layers that you have already tested.
How is the final price calculated?
The quotation depends on the mountain, route, number of days, group size, travel dates, residency category, hotel choice, rental equipment and any safari or Zanzibar extension. We provide a written list of everything included and excluded.
