Climb Overview

A complete plan from the mountain gate to the summit

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro through the historic Marangu Route, a well-established trail offering shared mountain-hut accommodation instead of tented camps.

The climb begins in the lush rainforest at Marangu Gate and continues through changing ecological zones towards Mandara Hut and Horombo Hut. An additional acclimatisation day at Horombo allows climbers to explore the surrounding landscape before continuing across the alpine desert to Kibo Hut.

The final summit attempt begins around midnight. Climbers ascend towards Gilman’s Point on the crater rim before continuing to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres.

Although Marangu has a developed trail and hut accommodation, it remains a physically demanding high-altitude climb. Reaching the summit cannot be guaranteed, and the instructions of the head guide must always be followed.

Fitness requirements

The Marangu Route requires good cardiovascular fitness, physical endurance and mental preparation. Climbers should be comfortable walking for approximately five to eight hours on consecutive days. The summit day may involve twelve to fifteen hours of climbing and descending.

We recommend beginning regular training at least eight to twelve weeks before arrival. Training should include long-distance walking, hill climbing, stair exercises, cardiovascular workouts and strength exercises for the legs and core.

Whenever possible, practise hiking while carrying the daypack you will use on the mountain. Climbers with existing medical conditions should consult a qualified healthcare professional before booking a high-altitude climb.

Altitude and safety

Climbing Kilimanjaro involves travelling to very high altitude. The itinerary includes an acclimatisation day at Horombo Hut, but every climber responds differently to altitude, and reaching the summit cannot be guaranteed.

Climbers must immediately report symptoms such as persistent headache, unusual fatigue, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, loss of coordination or difficulty breathing.

A climber experiencing worsening altitude-related symptoms must not continue ascending. The head guide may require a climber to rest, descend or end the climb when necessary for safety. The head guide’s safety decision is final.

Every client should obtain travel insurance that specifically covers high-altitude trekking and emergency medical evacuation up to 6,000 metres.
