Climb Overview

A complete plan from the mountain gate to the summit

Climb Africa’s highest mountain through the spectacular Machame Route, one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and rewarding trails. This seven-day adventure begins in the lush rainforest at Machame Gate before crossing the beautiful Shira Plateau, climbing to Lava Tower for acclimatisation, passing beneath the Southern Ice Fields and overcoming the famous Barranco Wall.

The journey continues through Karanga and Barafu camps before the final nighttime ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres. After celebrating at the summit, climbers descend through Mweka Route.

The seven-day schedule provides more time for acclimatisation than shorter Machame itineraries. Climbers are supported by professional mountain guides, cooks and porters throughout the journey.

Fitness requirements

The Machame Route requires good cardiovascular fitness, physical endurance and mental preparation. Climbers should be comfortable walking for approximately five to eight hours on consecutive days, with the summit day potentially lasting twelve to sixteen hours.

We recommend beginning regular training at least eight to twelve weeks before arrival. Training should include long walks, hill climbing, stair exercises, cardiovascular workouts and strength exercises for the legs and core. Whenever possible, practise hiking while carrying the daypack you will use on the mountain.

Climbers with existing medical conditions should consult a qualified healthcare professional before booking a high-altitude climb.

Altitude and safety

Climbing Kilimanjaro involves travelling to very high altitude, and reaching the summit cannot be guaranteed. The itinerary includes gradual ascent and an acclimatisation climb to Lava Tower, but every climber responds differently to altitude.

Our guides monitor the health of each climber and maintain a slow, steady pace. Climbers must immediately report symptoms such as persistent headache, unusual fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, confusion, loss of coordination or difficulty breathing.

A climber experiencing worsening altitude-related symptoms must not continue ascending. The head guide may require a climber to rest, descend or end the climb when necessary for safety. The guide’s safety decision is final.

All clients should obtain travel insurance that specifically covers high-altitude trekking and emergency medical evacuation up to 6,000 metres.
